Hosford-Abernethy is a close-in neighborhood in SE Portland situated between the Willamette River and 29th Avenue from west to east and Hawthorne and Powell from north to south. It is frequently referred to Division/Clinton district as it encompasses the lively crop of shops and restaurants running along those streets. The neighborhood’s name reference its pubic schools: Hosford Middle School and Abernethy Elementary. Hosford-Abernethy’s boundaries contain Ladd’s Addition (neighborhood within a neighborhood), which I will post on separately soon as its unique layout and remarkably architected homes are most definitely deserving of a proper shout-out.
This neighborhood is highly walkable and perfect for gastronomers (eek, I’m looking for a word to replace “foodie” from my vocabulary, not sure if this hits the mark though?!). The housing choices in Hosford-Abernethy are a mix, like most of Portland, but it is definitely home to some of the sweetest Victorians and farmhouses in town.
Steph’s top picks in Hosford-Abernethy:
Eat: Burrasca for a taste of old world Italy in modern surroundings. My husband and I dined at this restaurant after solidifying our travel plans for Tuscany this coming summer. It certainly did a great job getting us excited for the upcoming trip. The salad was light and fresh and the handmade pappardelle with boar ragu still makes my mouth water. They have a pretty extensive grappa menu as well, which I will have to try on our next visit.
Imbibe: Nuestra Cocina for spot-on Margaritas. Yum!
Play: OMSI for catching a movie on their 4-story screen. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry run Hollywood blockbusters as well as docs to get your science fix.
Shop: Blink for some quality eyewear and customer service. They offer you hot cocoa or tea while you peruse their extensive selection of frames and sunglasses as well.
