Sunnyside is a neighborhood in Southeast Portland that is often called “Hawthorne” because it borders the hipster-y section of Hawthorne Boulevard to the south. “Belmont” Street also runs through it and it may be called that as well. However, there technically are no Hawthorne or Belmont neighborhoods even though people act like they are.
Sunnyside’s borders are Stark at the top, Hawthorne at the bottom and 28th and 49th on the sides. The homes are a diverse mix of Victorians, Bungalows, Foursquare, and Modern, green construction. Homes tend to have smaller backyards than other neighborhoods. The allure of this neighborhood is definitely its proximity to the plethora of restaurants, shops, music venues and theaters on Hawthorne, Belmont and 28th. I love jogging around this neighborhood and getting inspired by the landscaping and paint colors of the houses.
Steph’s top picks:
Eat: Assorted sashimi plate at Bamboo Sushi. Sustainably sourced fish, artfully presented in a modern, fun atmosphere. I can’t say enough about this restaurant. Be sure to partake in the daily special, last night I had one of the most buttery white fin tuna served on a pink salt block. Yum!
Imbibe: Beer at Zach’s Shack. This little place is great for a late night beer and New York-style, Chicago-style or any style you fancy dog. It’s open until 3am!
Shop: Footwear at Imelda & Louie’s shoes. This shop has a fantastic selection of women and men’s shoes. I get so many compliments on the clog booties I recently purchased there. The staff is super friendly and attentive.
Play: Catch a show at Hawthorne Theater. Small, intimate music venue that books some talented artists; such as, Geographer – one of my favorites.
